Video on Blogs: The Next Big Thing?

graphic image of a green television

A notion that I have heard repeated at conferences and in discussions is that video, which is already prevalent in the world of social networks, will be the next big thing in the world of blogging. Yet, when I spend time searching out and reading blogs, I find that most of the time I don’t see any video being used. When there is video, a lot of it is just clips embedded from YouTube rather than original content produced by the blogger. Don’t get me wrong; there are a decent number of bloggers utilizing video and these numbers do seem to be increasing. I just feel, however, that the hype about video being the next big thing for bloggers might be a little over done.

What do you guys think about video on blogs? Is it something you will use on your blog? Do you see a lot of videos being used on blogs you visit? Do you think that more and more bloggers will start using videos on their blogs? Do you think having videos on your blog is valuable?

We’d love to hear what you think!

Backcountry Magazine's blogs has some EXTENSIVE vlogs.. including a few on trail cooking (check out frying eggs in a brownpaper bag!)

Until now I still see serious bloggers using video as an additional for strengthen their article. The video still on topic of their article, not just sharing it.

I myself, better visiting YouTube if only want to see an online video clip.

I very much dislike all-video blogs. I don't have enough bandwidth to download seven videos on the front page of any given site, nor do I have the patience to wait while the thing buffers every 40 second. While the occasional video can add some color and interest to your blog, I don't believe that video blogging will take over the blogosphere. Too few people have the connection to bother with getting all of their content that way.

I do think it would be fun to see BC staff interviewing each other, though. :P

On one hand, I don't cotton to blogs that consist of nothing but video embeds. There are zillions of blogs that consist of nothing but embeds that can be found on so many blogs that one wonders if some bloggers don't use them simply to escape having to create something original. On the other, I do enjoy blogs that have occasional embeds backed by text created by the blogger.

I do have videos on both of my blogs but they are few in number. I'm aware that my blog’s page load time will increase in accord with the number of images, videos, other media embeds and the number of widgets running script I have on your blog. I'm also aware that t least half of all internet users are currently using dial up connections. What that means to us bloggers is that half of our visitors are downloading the pages at about 3-4 kilobytes per second. And it’s estimated that if a page has not loaded with within 8-10 seconds we can stand to lose one third of our visitors.

We recently got a nicle little camera for BC so we can start adding vids and doing some interviews. i

MEH ... I really don't care whether or not the interviews found in this blog contain videos. However, I do think it would be cool if BC members could post a single video on their BC Profile page featuring a very brief bio, and a statement about what they blog about.

Shirley, I agree that video can be useful. We recently got a nicle little camera for BC so we can start adding vids and doing some interviews. i guess the usefulbness depends on what you blog about. I'm sure someone doing interviews or going to events will find it more useful than someone with say a poetry blog.

@cookingasshole...I would love to see your videos! I think they would be highly entertaining. Maybe we should see if BC would fund a nicer camera for you if we can then feature and promote the vids on BC. Just an idea.

@4wrd...some of the issues we have talked about here is that videos are much less effective than text for SEO, so it seems less valuable to bloggers. I personally watch videos and have started adding some to the BC blog, but I too am still not convinced it will be the next big trend in the blogosphere.

I have used video. I don't know if it will be the next big thing or not. They can be useful though. I see just as much video as I do writing.

I presently use Youtube video on my blog. I'm not sure I see how video on blogs can be experienced as the next big thing, unless....like twitter-it is video in real time. Live video with all the uncertainty and unediting that comes with it has potential for cool moments and dull hours.

I would love to make my own cooking videos but alas I do not have a nice enough camera. As far as other people's blogs go, I never watch videos.
