Mother’s Day is once again upon us and that means mothers everywhere will be savoring delicious breakfasts in bed, inhaling the delicate aromas of fresh picked bouquets, smiling at hand-drawn cards offered up by eager young hands, and enjoying the one day officially set aside to say thank you—thank you for all your hard work and dedication to arguably the world’s hardest and most underpaid job.
Here at BlogCatalog we wanted to say our own Mother’s Day thank you to the moms out there and we wanted to give a couple of our BlogCatalog moms a special gift. “But, what” we wondered “would Mommy Bloggers want most for Mother’s Day?” Well, we figured they’d probably want what all other bloggers want…exposure!
So, on this very special day, we have selected two of BlogCatalog’s Mommy Bloggers to participate in a Q & A. We asked TexasHolly and Motherwise to share what being a mother means to them, what they love about being a mom, what challenges them and what is their idea of a perfect mother’s day. Here’s what they had to say:
Q: How many children do you have? Ages?
TH: I have three boys. 3, 5 and 8
MW: Three – ages 26, 21, 18.
Q: What word would best describe your own mother? Why?
TH: Nurturing. She is a great mom. I had a great childhood – our house was always a safe place to be. My mom really put everyone in the family before herself. It was clear that she was there to help us.
MW: A teacher – by example. She made it so clear that your own actions are the best predictor of how people react to you.
Q: What was your mother’s biggest effect on your life?
TH: She is extremely level-headed. She has NEVER raised her voice at me – in 38 YEARS! There never was a cross word between my parents or yelling and screaming tolerated from anyone in the house.
MW: I realized that I wanted to be a great mom to my own kids, and that it involved the gift of time, and the ability to put others’ needs ahead of my own.
Q: What qualities do you most wish to instill in your children?
TH: I want them to embrace life – explore, learn, love and seek adventure.
MW: I want my kids to be happy, well adjusted and to remember that I was always right.
Q: What do you love best about being a mother?
TH: I love the sweet moments, the hugs, the kisses, the firsts, the lasts, the mundane, the adventures. I love seeing the world through their eyes.
MW: The times when I see that my kids sometimes handle situations and people better than me.
Q: What’s the biggest challenge of being a mother?
TH: Sanity. I think keeping a good perspective on things is one of the hardest things to do. In most situations, I find that I misplace anger and frustration and when I look back I wonder why the big picture often is elusive.
MW: To stick with your basic instincts about what is the right thing to do when everyone around you is making concessions. The best way isn’t usually the easy way. Also, not swearing in front of your kids when they are little. (I did cheat a little and let “crap” become my favorite word. Still is.)
Q: What is the perfect Mother’s Day gift or event for you?
TH: I have three boys. Avoiding any “events” is probably best-especially if they are in public. I would love some homemade cards, snuggling while watching a movie with popcorn and a walk around the neighborhood.
MW: It would involve massive quantities chocolate, a pedicure and getting proofed, all in the presence of my whole family.
Q: Is being a mother what you imagined it would be? Why or why not?
TH: Not really. I never imagined the work involved. I never would have guessed I had the capacity for such intense emotion.
MW: Honestly, I never really thought about being a mom. I just knew I would be. For something I gave so little thought to, I now consider it one of my life’s greatest accomplishments.
Q: What one piece of advice would you give to new mothers?
TH: BIG PICTURE. Try to step back and look at life. And laugh more. Babies love to laugh and new moms could use one.
MW: Savor every moment and be sure to save a few for just you. Take an exercise class, keep doing your hobbies or going out with friends once in a while so that you don’t lose who you are.
Q: What one thing can you not live without?
TH: That is a hard question. I am a true believer that every moment, choice and action has lead me to where I am today. I think if you started removing pieces from the puzzle, however insignificant they seem now it would change what is TODAY. Today is pretty good.
MW: A cell phone. It makes it possible to bother my children (and vice versa) with text, photos, video and voice.
